"Ocalan's safety is paramount."
May 2, 2007
Green Euro MP Jean Lambert on April 25 has called on
the Council of Europe to investigate if the Kurdish
leader, Abdullah Ocalan, is a victim of poisoning.
On 1st March 2007 it was announced that the results
of laboratory tests on Ocalan's hair had confirmed
highly increased values of Strontium and Chrome -
indicating chronic poisoning.
Over 70 people have taken part in a hunger strike
since the beginning of April 2007 protesting against
the poisoning and today demonstrated outside the
European Parliament in Strasbourg emphasizing their
message. |

Jean Lambert, who has been awarded for her work on
Justice and Human Rights, signed the petition,
initiated by German MEP Feleknas Uca, for Ocalan's
safety and today met with those demonstrating.
Jean commented; "Ocalan's safety is paramount in
this situation. Although he has been imprisoned he
should not be kept in a situation where his life
could be in danger or his treatment is inhumane.
"I now urge the Council of Europe to ask the
European Committee for the Prevention of Torture to
immediately send an independent delegation of
doctors to the island of Imrali, where Ocalan is
being held, to check the results of these earlier
tests and to examine his general state of health."

** The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously
rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan" Southeast

Others estimate as many as 40 million Kurds live in
Big Kurdistan (Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran, Armenia),
which covers an area as big as France, about half of
all Kurds which estimate to 20 million live in
Turkey.
Turkey is home to some 20 million ethnic Kurds, some
of whom openly sympathise with the Kurdish PKK for a
Kurdish homeland in the country's mainly Kurdish
southeast of Turkey.
Before August 2002, the Turkish government placed
severe restrictions on the use of Kurdish language,
prohibiting the language in education and broadcast
media.
The Kurdish alphabet is still not recognized
in Turkey, and use of the Kurdish letters X, W, Q
which do not exist in the Turkish
alphabet has led to judicial persecution in 2000 and
