SEOUL, -- A senior Iraqi provincial
government official is set to visit South Korea next
week to discuss ways of promoting ties with the
country, which has dispatched thousands of troops to
the war-torn Middle East nation, officials said
Wednesday.
"Erbil Governor Nawjad Hadi Mawlood is to arrive
here on Monday for a five-day stay," Song Gyeong-jin,
an official at Gyeonggi provincial government told
Yonhap News Agency.
Erbil, a northern Kurdistan region-controlled area,
is the home to 1,200 South Korean troops, called
Zaytun unit, with the mission of helping Iraq's
reconstruction efforts.
The governor is to seek closer ties between his
province and South Korean cities, as well as asking
for the government to retain its troops in Erbil.
"He will be accompanied by 10 other Erbil city
officials who have been selected for a two-week
training on the operation of a library," Song added.
The Gyeonggi provincial authorities have agreed to
provide support for the Zaytun unit's plan to
construct a library in downtown Erbil, including the
donation of books and training of librarians.
Speaking to Yonhap at his office in March, the Erbil
governor said he would formally ask Seoul to
maintain its troop presence there.
The South Korean government plans to draw up by the
end of June a timetable for the pullout of the
troops.
