Anfal: The Kurdish Genocide trial resumes
in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, May 8,-- Iraq's Supreme Criminal
Court resumed Tuesday looking into the Anfal
genocide case in which six of Saddam Hussein's
former aides stood trial.
The defendants are accused of killing over 182,000
Kurds in 1988, including babies, women and elderly.
The court had listened yesterday to the attorney of
Saber Al-Douri, who headed the intelligence
authority at the time and was one of the six accused
in the genocide.
Al-Douri pleaded "not guilty" for the crime, saying
he neither executed military operations nor
participated as a field
commander.
He said his duty was to collect intelligence. |

In today's session, the court will listen to a
defense speech by defense attorney for Hussein
Rasheed Mohammad, who was then assistant to the
commander of the armed forces.
Chief Justice Mohammad Al-Oraibi, presiding over the
case, has already noted that political issues were
not to be included in any defense speeches.
Anfal trial adjourned till tomorrow
Justice in the Supreme Criminal Court Mohammad Al-Oraibi
adjourned on Tuesday the 75th session of the Anfal
Trial and assigned tomorrow (Wednesday) to resume
the next session.
In today's session, the court listened to testimony
by defense attorney for one of the defendants
Hussein Rasheed Mohammad, who was then assistant to
the commander of the armed forces.
The Anfal genocide case looks into six of Saddam
Hussein's former aides standing trial for killing
scores of Kurds in 1988, including babies, women and
elderly.

defense lawyers in the upcoming sessions, has
