The
use of poor construction materials by Turkish
companies in Kurdistan region will be closely
monitored
May 10, 2007
Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- The
Kurdish government in Kurdistan (northern Iraq) is
preparing to set up a center to monitor foreign
companies in the region.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Press Center
claims that Turkish companies operating in the area
have policies that are obstructing development in
the region.
The PUK Press Center official Web site published a
report citing Kurdish and foreign economists, and
warned that use of poor construction materials by
Turkish companies in the region will be closely
monitored.
According to experts 90 percent of foreign companies
in the region operate without capital and most
Kurdish workers are unemployed.
The report, which focuses mainly on Turkish
companies, claims that Turkish companies have won
million-dollar tenders without any capital.
It asserts that Turkish entrepreneurs do not have
rational investment policies and have brought in
workers from Turkey to complete construction
projects rather than using local Kurdish laborers.
It alleges that Turkish companies do not want Kurds
to develop experience in the construction sector,
and for this reason have not employed Kurdish
workers or technicians.
According to the report a research center to study
the policies of Erbil's economy will be set up to
monitor all foreign companies operating in the
region and companies that violate the Investment
Encouragement Law will be taken to court while those
that operate without capital will not be allowed to
complete projects.
While the Erbil research center has not yet been set
up, a tender won by a Turkish company to build a
road project has been cancelled.
Asyad Mir, a Turkish company, was forced to leave
the $10 million project because the company could
not launch the project within 16 months.
The project has been transferred to the Sulaimaniyah
Highway Directorate.
Turkey's trade volume in Iraq increased to $2.7
million after the US liberation of Iraq. Most of the
Turkish companies are in Kurdistan (northern Iraq).
