Massoud Barzani interrupts European tour, returns to
Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- President
of Iraq's Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani
interrupted his European tour and returned on Monday
to Erbil to follow up the recent security
developments in the Kurdistan region capital Erbil,
Barzani's office said.
"President Barzani has one more visit to a European
country, but he decided to interrupt his visit and
to return home," Head of the Presidential office of
Kurdistan region Fouad Hussein said.
Hussein considered the recent armed attack that
jolted the city of Erbil in the last few days as
aiming to destabilize the region.
Erbil, the capital city of Iraq's Kurdistan, was the
scene of a booby-trapped truck explosion last
Wednesday that killed
14 and injured 87, most of whom were interior
ministry employees.
This was the second incident in the relatively-safe
city since 2004, when a suicide bomber blew himself
up inside a vehicle near the interior ministry. |

Thirty-two people were also
killed and 115 wounded
on Sunday in a car bomb attack that targeted a
headquarters of Barzani's Kurdistan Democratic Party
(KDP) in the district of Makhmor near Erbil.
Barzani's European tour, which started on April 19,
took him to Italy, France and Brussels, where he met
with senior officials in the European Union, the
official noted.
