Iraqi-Turkish relations should rely on
mutual respect: Iraqi VP

BAGHDAD, Iraq, -- Iraqi Vice President Adel
Abdul Mahdi said on Monday that the Iraqi-Turkish
relations should rely on common interests, mutual
respect and not to interfere in internal affairs,
Mahdi's office said.
The vice president emphasized, during his meeting
with a visiting Turkish envoy, Iraq's keenness to
have good relations with Turkey.
"Vice President Abdul Mahdi said that the bilateral
relations should depend on common interests and
mutual interest," Mahdi's office said.
For his part, the Turkish envoy voiced his country's
desire to develop and strengthen relations with the
Iraqi government, noting to the deeply-rooted ties
between the two neighboring countries.
He expressed regret for the dramatic and
deteriorating situation in the Iraqi territories
which left scores of civilians dead, the statement
added.
It added "the visiting envoy also asserted Turkey's
readiness to help and support the Iraqi people."
The northern borders with Turkey have been a source
of tensions sometimes between the two neighboring
countries because of the Turkish shelling of some of
the Turkish Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) hideouts
inside the Iraqi territories.
