Iraqi-Turkish relations should rely on mutual respect: Iraqi VP  29.5.2007

May 29, 2007

BAGHDAD, Iraq, -- Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Monday that the Iraqi-Turkish relations should rely on common interests, mutual respect and not to interfere in internal affairs, Mahdi's office said.

The vice president emphasized, during his meeting with a visiting Turkish envoy, Iraq's keenness to have good relations with Turkey.

"Vice President Abdul Mahdi said that the bilateral relations should depend on common interests and mutual interest," Mahdi's office said.

For his part, the Turkish envoy voiced his country's desire to develop and strengthen relations with the Iraqi government, noting to the deeply-rooted ties between the two neighboring countries.

He expressed regret for the dramatic and deteriorating situation in the Iraqi territories which left scores of civilians dead, the statement added.

It added "the visiting envoy also asserted Turkey's readiness to help and support the Iraqi people."

The northern borders with Turkey have been a source of tensions sometimes between the two neighboring countries because of the Turkish shelling of some of the Turkish Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) hideouts inside the Iraqi territories.
