Armenia: Muradov says Aziz Tamoyan isn’t the leader of world Yazidi Kurds 3.4.2007

April 3, 2007

Hamlet Muradov who contributed to the “Riya taza” newspaper published in Yerevan and the radio broadcasted in Kurdish and lives now in Stockholm said that they didn’t consider Aziz Tamoyan as the leader of world Yezidis, APA reports quoting Armenian press.

Muradov said that Tashin bey was the leader of world Yezidi Kurds and Aziz Tamoyan was fraud who worked at Armenian Defense Ministry.

“He derives benefit from the facts of insulting Kurds in Armenian Army. He is misleading Kurds to serve to the Armenian adventure”, he said.

Charkaz Maroyan, chief of Kurdistan Committee in Armenia drawing attention to the election of the “Nagorno Karabakh’s former defense minister”, now the head of “Dashnik” Party Samvel Babayan the honorary member of “World Yezidis national unity stressed that Aziz Tamoyan’s activity creates separation among Kurds.

Maroyan said that Tamoyan advised him not to spread information on the hurting of Kurds in Armenian Army many times. He said that if follows that, he will be under the protection of Sarkisyan.

Maroyan stated that they will never forget the continuous deceptive thoughts of Sakisyan, Babayan about Kurds.

“The Kurd’s intellectual level is low and therefore, they are used in relevant positions in the Army like in civil life”, Armenian Defense Minister Sarkisyan said at the event dedicated to the 15th anniversary of Armenian Army on March 28. And Kurds expressed their dissatisfaction with this statement.

On March 22, leader Aziz Tamoyan said “They want to disrupt Yezidi people,” . According to him some people have decided to disrupt the yezdi community in Armenia. “Though minority, we are RA citizens. We know all leaders of the 27 parties but we need to elect just one of them. If I make our choice public, it will give reason to some conflict.

For minorities it is a secret voting. We know who we are electing, but I won’t tell it.” Although Mr. Tamoyan has refrained from informing who yezdi residents are voting for, the yezdi people are turned out to be adherents of three parties: ‘Alliance', ‘Prosperous Armenia' and 'People's Party'.

** The Yazidi or Yezidi are primarily ethnic Kurds. The origins of Yazidism are ultimately shrouded in Middle Eastern prehistory. Although the Yazidis speak Kurdish

Yazidis in Iraq & Kurdistan
It is alleged by some that during the regime of Saddam Hussein, Yazidis were considered to be Arabs and maneuvered to oppose the Kurds, in order to tilt the ethnic balance in Kurdistan (northern Iraq), but this cannot be entirely substantiated. It is known, however, that the Yazidi's unique identity, despite being ethnically Kurdish, was in fact used by the Baathist regime to isolate one from the other. However, both groups fought against Baathist troops, often in joint Peshmerga units. Since the 2003 occupation of Iraq, the Kurds want the Yazidi to be recognized as ethnic Kurds to increase their numbers and influence.

Religious significance

The Yazidis consider Melek Taus to be a benevolent angel that has redeemed himself from his fall, and has become a demiurge who created the cosmos from the Cosmic Egg. After he repented, he cried for 7000 years, his tears filling 7 jars, which then quenched the fires of hell.

Melek Taus is sometimes transliterated Malak Ta'us or Malik Taws. In Semitic languages, malik variably means "king" or "angel". Taus is  uncontroversially translated "peacock"; however, it is important to note that peacocks are not, at least currently, native to the lands where Melek Taus is worshipped.

This has lead some to speculate that the worship of Melek Taus was imported from India, though it is more likely the peacock iconography is a development from earlier representations depicting the god as a native fowl, such as a bustard. The Yazidi believe that the founder of their religion, Sheikh Adi Ibn Mustafa, was an avatar of Melek Taus. In art and sculpture Melek Taus is depicted as peacock. The Yazidi are thought to be unique in their depiction of their primary god as a bird.
