Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), --
Heavy rain continued to lash many places in the
Kurdistani city of Sulaimaniyah today, for the third
consecutive day, plummeting temperatures by several
degrees, the Sulaimaniyah meteorological department
said on Wednesday.
"The city so far has received 18 mm of rain since
yesterday. After the downpour the mercury dropped to
five degrees below average temperatures today, to
settle close to zero degrees Celsius," the
meteorological department’s director Dara Hassan
said.
He added, "the meteorological office has forecast
rather heavy rain in many places in the Kurdistan
region in northern "Iraq" during the next week."
"The total amount of rain this year in Sulaimaniyah
region has reached 444 mm, compared to 812 mm in
2006 and 545 mm in 2005," Hassan said.
He added, "the rainy season will continue in
Sualimaniyah until mid May. 400 mm more rain is
expected to be received in the city."
This wave of rains has had positive effects on
agriculture and water resources in the Kurdistan
region, said Hassan.
Iraq's Kurdistan region, which includes Sulaimaniyah,
Duhuk and Erbil, receives more rain compared to
other parts of Iraq, due to its topography rich in
mountains.
