Kirkuk, (Iraq-Kurdistan region) border,
Kamran Kurdi (eKurd.net),
-- The
multiethnic and oil-rich city of Kirkuk is
witnessing an alarming escalation in violence as the
impending referendum draws nearer. A formerly stable
city, Kirkuk is now on the brink of a sinister civil
war.
The level of civilian casualties and displaced
refugees has bourgeoned to an inexorable point.
There has also been a significant rise in insurgent
and terrorist attacks and the Iraqi government has
failed to impede the rapidly deteriorating security
situation. The US forces are endeavoring to smother
the insurgency in and around Baghdad, while failing
to notice the tangible peril looming in Kirkuk
The current status quo is perturbing and if a
functional remedy is not sought instantly, it could
totally undermine US security plans.
It is time for the US to surrender Kirkuk to Kurdish
forces. Kurds are well-trained and well-equipped to
maintain the security situation in Kirkuk. They have
made a significant progress in building security
forces that are capable of independently combating
insurgents and fighting terrorists.
If Kirkuk is incorporated into the Kurdish
autonomous region, Kurds can enhance the security
and diminishing economic state of the city and
transform it into a model for the rest of Iraq to
follow.
And this is the precise and ultimate goal of US
administration. To stabilize Iraq and hand over the
legal responsibilities to its own people to
shoulder.

Kirkuk city is a Kurdistani city and it lies just
south border of the Kurdistan autonomous region and
it is not under the full control of Kurdistan
Regional Government administration, its population
is a mix of majority Kurds and minority of Arabs,
Turkmen.
The former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein forced
about 250,000 Kurdish residents to give up their
homes to Arabs in the 1970s, to "Arabize" the city
and the region's oil industry.
Based on Iraq's Constitution a referendum is to be
held in late 2007 to decide whether the oil-rich
Kurdish province should be annexed to the safe
semiautonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq's north.
