Sulaimaniyah border guards clash with
Islamist gunmen

Sualiamniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq)--
Fierce clashes broke out between Sulaimaniyah border
guards and gunmen, believed of having links to the
Kurdistan brigades of Ansar al-Islam terrorists
armed group, in Penjwin district near the borders
with Iran, a source at Kurdistan border guards said
on Saturday.
"Two explosive charges detonated this afternoon near
a vehicle patrol of Kurdistan border guards on the
main road linking the villages of Drorkan and Khloza
within Panjwin district," Colonel Kamal Mohammed,
commander of border guards in Panjwin, said.
The source added "immediately after the double
blast, gunmen, believed to be from Kurdistan
brigades of Ansar al-Islam terrorist armed group,
attacked the patrol elements."
"Fierce clashes broke out between our troops and the
gunmen who used RPGs and mid-sized arms," said
Colonel Mohammed, noting the gunmen fled the scene
to Mount Kaji on the Iranian borders.
The source who did not say whether there were
casualties among the attackers said "the clashes
only set a patrol vehicle ablaze."
This is the second incident of its kind in Banjwin
district, 105 km east of Sulaimaniyah, over the last
two months.
Sulaimanyah province within Kurdistan region is 550
northeast of Baghdad.
