Nechirvan Barzani Kurdistan's PM lays foundations of IT training centre  25.4.2007

April 25, 2007

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (Iraq) -– Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani today laid the foundation of the first Information Technology Training Centre in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region’s capital.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, the Prime Minister said, “I am sure that upon completion this facility will become a notable centre for our Region. Not only will it help train our people, but it will also help to connect our Region to the world.”

The IT Training Centre is being funded and built by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), following Prime Minister Barzani’s request to the Korean government to support IT in Kurdistan. The project is a result of cooperation between the KRG’s Department of Information Technology and KOICA.

The Prime Minister said, “We look forward to our youth benefiting from this centre by acquiring modern expertise as they train here. We must encourage a culture of learning and perseverance.

Without perseverance little that is worthwhile can be achieved. If we desire a better life, we must work hard to attain it.” He also thanked KOICA and all the parties involved for their support and said that Kurdistan hopes to follow Korea’s example of success

Botan Mahmoud Osman, Head of the Department of Information Technology, and the son of Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdish legislator and politician and member of the Kurdistan National Democratic Union, said “We are here today to set the foundation stone for the first IT Training Centre in Erbil, which will in return lay the foundations for the future of information technology in the great Region of Kurdistan. We believe that with dedication and innovation we can develop and enhance this IT Training Centre to provide maximum benefits for the people of Kurdistan.”

The Information Technology Training Centre is due to be completed in 12 months. It will provide training for government employees, the general public, and the private sector, and will also offer to provide training for the federal government of Iraq. The aim is that in the future the centre should be able to support itself financially.
