Apparently there are some so-called experts writing
about Kurds again. Recently an Arabic columnist,
Maher Othman, wrote a piece about [Barzani,
Israel and Kurds] . He thought it was
strange that Barzani "never heard of the Israeli
penetration of his region, even though it is a
commonly known fact that was tackled by
distinguished Western journalists like Seymour
Hersh."
In fact this "distinguished" Western journalist got
his information about Israel supporting PJAK ("PKK's
brothers") in Iran from Turkey. Recently another
journalist (Reese
Erlich) claimed that America is supporting
PJAK. He doesn't show the basis of his claims that
America supports the PJAK. It's true that America
invited Komala and KDP-I members, but they didn't
invite PJAK and both PJAK and America denied
friendly ties. But still journalists are using the
propaganda of Seymour Hersch, which some states are
trying to use for their own benefit. It reminds me
of a western blogger claiming that the Kurdish
unrest in 2004 was organized by Israel.
It would be strange for Israel to support the PJAK,
because the PKK launched some attacks against Israel
in the past and in general Israeli's like Kurds, but
not the PKK. This also maybe has to do with Turkey's
alliance with Israel and because the Israeli's are
opposed to the anti-Israeli Iran, ex-Iraq and Syria,
but not against secular Turkey. But nobody talks
about "Erdogan, Israel and Turks" nor about the
relations of several Middle-Eastern states with
Israel.
The Arabic columnist Maher Othman claimed that
"Damascus has never, at any point in history,
considered the Kurds a problem;". He claims that
there was "never any discrimination against them."
My friend Kawa Rashid from Syrian Kurdistan knows
better and told me several times about torture,
oppression and other "problematic" issues. Amnesty
says that Repression of Kurds in Syria is
widespread. (More here:
Kurds in the Syrian Arab Republic one year after the
March 2004 events ). I really don't know what
Maher Othman is talking about.
Recently I talked about this issue through e-mail
with Esra'a from the Arabic country Bahrein, she
told me that Syria has never been fair with it's
Kurds. "That article is either ill-informed or a
lie. They aren't even allowed to officially call
themselves Kurdish, they are being stripped away
from their own identity. I have some Kurdish friends
there and not all of them are satisfied. The only
ones who are satisfied are the ones who just accept
what they are being put through, or they pick up an
Arabic identity instead. 2 of my friends got
arrested and this is why I'm so concerned about the
Kurds in the Mideast." She is now searching for
Kurdish writers/bloggers to give a bigger voice to
the Kurds on
Mid East Youth .
There are plans of the Syrian Kurds to
boycott the upcoming
elections.

** Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria
making up 10% of the country's population i.e. about
two million.
Kurds in Syria often speak Kurdish in public,
unless all those present do not. Kurdish human
rights activists are mistreated and persecuted. No
political parties are allowed for any group, Kurdish
or otherwise. Suppression of ethnic identity of
Kurds in Syria include: various bans on the use of
the Kurdish language; refusal to register children
with Kurdish names; replacement of Kurdish place
names with new names in Arabic; prohibition of
businesses that do not have Arabic names; not
permitting Kurdish private schools; and the
prohibition of books and other materials written in
Kurdish.
