BAGHDAD, -- Defense attorney of Al-Anfal
genocides' case called at a court session on Monday
to convict all the accused on charges of mass
killing that targeted the Kurdish community in the
1980s.
The lawyer, in a marathon address to the presiding
judges, said that all the accused, including the
executed former president, Saddam Hussein, should be
convicted, noting Saddam was the sole leader in the
ousted regime who had the power to order the
launching of such a genocide, exterminating natives
of villages with chemical agents.
He said Sultan Hashemi, one of Saddam's close aides,
had asked Saddam to give permission to bomb Kurdish
villages with contaminating gas, and that the
executed leader had honored him with four medals
after end of the offensive in Kurdistan (northern
Iraq).
The accused, Taher Al-Aani, had a prime role in
distributing a decision according to which scores of
civilian Kurds were executed.
The 51st session of the Al-Anfal case trial resumed,
trying six of the former aides of the executed
leader, for charges of involvement in exterminating
182,000 civilian Kurds in the 1988 campaign.
