Turkish General Buyukanit and
US appointee Ralston meet yesterday on PKK

The US special appointed representive to the
struggle against the Kurdish rebels PKK, retired
General Joseph Ralston, met yesterday with General
Yasar Buyukanit, the commanding general of the
Turkish Armed Forces.
The two men reportedly spoke largely about the US
forces' actions against the PKK presence in northern
Iraq, with General Buyukanit reserving criticism for
insufficient US precautions taken thus far. |

Buyukanit also reportedly told Ralston that the US
plan to leave Iraqi border security to Iraqi
security forces would not be acceptable.
General Ralston left Ankara yesterday, and is
expected to meet with Kurdistan President Massoud
Barzani one more time in Kurdistan (Northern Iraq).
PKK Kurdish separatist guerrillas operating out
of northern Iraq, Ankara is weighing up a
cross-border incursion to attack PKK bases.
More than 30,000 Turkish soldiers and PKK guerrillas
have been killed since 1984 when the PKK took up
arms for self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdish
southeast of Turkey.

the European Union.
Turkey is home to some 20 million ethnic Kurds, some
of whom openly sympathise with the PKK, Kurds
demands for independence for the southeastern and

rejected due to its alleged political implications
by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize
the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan"
