Save Kurdish Yezidis from Islamic extremism 17.2.2007
By Alan Daudey

February 17, 2007, eKurd.net

There are days of heavy fight between an Islamic tribe and the Yezidis in Sheikhan, a town mostly populated by Kurdish Yezidis. Many Yezidi holy places have been burnt down and the fundamentalists set fire to many cars and houses.

The cause of this turmoil is an alleged kidnapping of a Muslim Kurdish girl by two Yezidi males. The real story is that the girl of one of the neighbouring Muslim tribes escaped a marriage arranged by her parents, and on her way she asked two Yezidi men for a lift to Duhok.

The tribesmen of the girl's family were furious and took the girl away from the security of Sheikhan, and was murdered immediately by her family because she disgraced the family's honour. Her body was also mutilated.

These acts of honour killing are still normal practices in the backward society of South Kurdistan.

The Islamic tribesmen even set fire to the house of Yezidis leader Mir Tahsin, when the two males were hiding in his house.

The happenings in Sheikhan are being heavily censored and ignored by the official Kurdish outlets. And there is also surprising silence and passivity from KDP, the facto governors in the region.

Unfortunately until this day the Yezidis, the only remnants and holders of ancient Kurdish religion and traditions, are being heavily suppressed, attacked and stolen by their Muslim brethren. South Kurdistan needs a social revolution before it can start a serious nation building, and makes a step towards a modern and healthy society.
