February 16, 2007

Beirut, Lebanon, -- A delegation from the government in Iraqi Kurdistan led by Tourism Minister Nimrud Baito visited a number of Lebanese political and religious figures Thursday. Following a meeting in Bkirki with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros, the delegation headed to the Ministry of Tourism in Beirut to meet with Minister Joe Sarkis.

Baito said that his visit to Lebanon came after his Lebanese counterpart sent him an invitation.

"The Lebanese are known to be leaders in the field of tourism, so the main goal of our visit is to gain knowledge of the Lebanese pioneer experience and try to emulate it back in Kurdistan," Baito explained.

Baito said that he discussed with Sarkis the possibility of sending professionals from the Lebanese tourism sector to Kurdistan to help in reviving the tourism sector there.

Kurdistan is a semi-autonomous region in located in northern Iraq. Apart from his ministerial position in the regional government Baito is also secretary general of the Assyrian Patriotic Party.

The delegation later visited the leader of the Lebanese Forces, Samir Geagea, at his home in Bzummar, where they discussed recent developments in Lebanon and Iraq.

Following the meeting Baito said that Geagea and he exchanged wishes that both Lebanon and Iraq prosper and be spared civil wars.

"We also had a discussion about means by which bilateral Iraqi-Lebanese ties could be further enhanced," the visiting minister said.
