Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan region (Iraq), February 10, -- An official
in Iraq's Kurdistan region government called for
investigating the Erbil-Mosul juncture incident in
which nine Kurdish Peshmerga militia fighters were
killed when U.S.
warplanes mistakenly opened fire at them.
"We demanded an investigation to hold accountable
the people responsible for this incident which we
strongly denounce,"
Undersecretary of the Iraqi Kurdish ministry of
peshmerga, Jabbar Yawir, said on Saturday.
Yawir said sometimes the U.S. forces attack by
mistake some "allied" forces during battles and open
what they call "friendly fire."
The U.S. attack on the Erbil-Mosul juncture, where
peshmerga forces take their positions, had come
under attack by U.S. helicopters on Thursday night,
leaving nine militiamen killed and three others
wounded.
Asked on the peshmerga's possible participation in
military operations outside the Iraqi Kurdistan
region, Yawir replied "the peshmerga forces are
against terrorism, and we are already cooperating in
the fight against terror outside the region."
