Turkey shells an Iraqi Kurdistan region area: official 10.2.2007

February 10, 2007

Zakho, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- Turkish forces on Friday shelled with artillery an Iraqi area on the borderline with Turkey, a Kurdish official said.

"Six artillery shells that were fired from (Karri Rash) area in the Turkish territories fell near village (Barrakh) in the north of Zakho," Lieutenant Colonel Fahmi Sofi , deputy commander of Peshmerga 1st Division in Zakho, said.

Dozens Iraqi Kurdish villages within Iraq's Kurdistan Duhuk are located near the country's northern borders with Turkey with most of their residents work as shepherds.

Barrakh residents said the shelling resulted in no damage.

Ramadhan Faysal, a Barrakh resident, said "Turkish forces fired today at 3:00 pm six artillery shells onto (Galli Bahnona) area near village Barrakh but the shelling resulted in no damage."

Village Barrakh is 30 km north of Zakho, capital city of Duhuk province.

Last week, Turkish forces shelled areas near villages (Kistah) and (Nazdor) with no casualties reported.

Turkish authorities say their forces are chasing elements of the banned Turkish Kurdish workers' party (PKK) inside the Iraqi territories.
