AMMAN, Jordan -- Iraqi President Jalal
Talabani, who collapsed from exhaustion and
dehydration after suffering lung and sinus
infections, will leave the hospital soon, his doctor
said Wednesday, although he did not give an exact
date.
Talabani, 73, is now in "excellent shape" and has
"no clinical problems at all," Dr. Yedgar Hishmat
told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Talabani was flown to
Jordan late Sunday and admitted to the King
Hussein Medical City in the capital, Amman.
"The only thing preventing him from leaving the
hospital is that he must continue the treatment
completely, and it will be very soon," Hishmat said.
Earlier in the week, Hishmat, who accompanied
Talabani from Iraq, dismissed rumors that the
president also had a heart problem. |

In Baghdad, presidential spokesman Kamran Qaradaghi
said Talabani had shown a "clear and tangible
improvement" and that his "spirits are high."
Talabani fell ill in Sulaimaniyah, his hometown in
Kurdistan autonomous region (northeastern Iraq), and
was unconscious when rushed to the hospital. But he
recovered enough to be flown to neighboring Jordan
the same night.
He last appeared in public Saturday in Sulaimaniyah
when he met U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and
Massoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdish
autonomous region of Iraq.
A member of Talabani's party, the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan, has said Talabani has a long history of
fainting when he is exhausted _ a condition dating
back to his years as a Kurdish guerrilla leader
fighting Saddam Hussein's regime.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because
of the sensitivity of the subject.
