Istanbul, February 20, -- Iraqi vice
president Adel Abdulmahdi arrived for a two-day
visit to Ankara Tuesday on the personal airplane of
Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Turkish premier's gesture to offer to transport
Abdulmahdi, one of Iraq's top Shiite leaders, is
being interpreted as a response to recent grumblings
in Baghdad - where Shiites have been the dominant
force since Saddam Hussein's toppling - that Turkey
is only favouring Iraq's Sunni leaders.
Besides Erdogan, the Iraqi vice president is also
scheduled to meet Turkish foreign minister Abdullah
Gul. |

However, it seems Abdulmahdi will not meet Turkish
president Ahmet Necdet Sezer - who was attending a
function in Istanbul on Tuesday - prompting Turkish
media to speculate that the president's move
represents a snub to the Iraqi leader - in protest
against preceived inaction by Baghdad to curb
Kurdish separatists using Iraq's Kurdistan region to
launch attacks against Turkey.
