A row between Turkey and Iraq over the shipment of
petroleum products has been resolved.
Turkish Foreign Trade Minister Kursad Tuzmen
yesterday said Baghdad retracted a move to make
Kurdish authorities in Kurdistan (northern Iraq) the
sole interlocutors for contract renewals with
Turkish firms.
Iraq has required that all business in the north
be conducted
through the autonomous Kurdistan government.
The Iraqi decision had infuriated Ankara. Turkey
imports Iraqi oil, which it refines and sends back
to Iraq by trucks.
Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) has
sent an official letter to the Turkish
Undersecretariat for Foreign Trade saying that
shipments of oil products from Turkey would continue
on the basis of previous principles, the Anatolia
news agency reported yesterday.
Karim Vahid, acting Iraqi oil minister, has also
phoned Turkish State Minister Kürsad Tüzmen,
assuring him on behalf of his government that the
previous principles on the import of oil products
from Turkey would remain valid.
The Habur gate, the only border crossing between
Turkey and Iraq, was also closed to all vehicles
except trucks carrying materials destined for US
forces operating in the country.
The Anatolia news agency said shipments to Iraq were
expected to resume as of today.
