Eight Peshmerga troops, 3 terrorists killed in a gun battle  6.12.2007

Qaratapa, Khanaqin District, -- Eight Kurdish Peshmerga troops and three militant gunmen were killed in a battle northeast of Baghdad on Thursday, a spokesman for the Kurdish forces said.

A terrorist group attacked the headquarter of the 1st battalion, 4th brigade from the Iraqi army in an area to the south of Qaratapa County, Khanaqin District.

Major-General Jabbar Yawar, spokesman for Kurdistan Guard Forces (Peshmerga) units of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, said the fighting took place near the town of Khanaqin.
www.ekurd.net He announced that the clashes took place today and resulted in killing 8 Peshmergas and wounding some others. He also stated that the clashes are still going on, whereas Peshmerga forces killed 3 terrorists and pursuit the others.

Khanaqin, is a Kurdish district 140 km (85 miles) northeast of Baghdad, is in the volatile province of Diyala, near the border with the Iraqi autonomous Kurdistan region and Iran.

The Peshmergas, who have fought alongside U.S. and Iraqi troops, were attacked by gunmen with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

Five Peshmerga were wounded and the fighting continued into the afternoon near the ethnically and religiously mixed town.

No information about the identity of the gunmen was immediately available.
