Sanandaj (Sina), Iranian Kurdistan, --
The arrest of Kurdish reporter Omid Ahmadzadeh on
Monday in Sanadaj, western Iran, brings to 14 the
number of journalists currently detained in the
country.
Less than a week ago, another journalist, Reza
Valizadeh, was arrested in Sanadaj. Five others have
been incarcerated and two of them - Iranian Kurdish
journalists
Adnan Hassanpour and Hiwa
Boutimar - have been sentenced to
death.
Hassanpour and Boutimar, who are cousins, on 30
November received in absentia a prestigious Italian
freedom of the press award, The 2007 City of Siena -
ISF press prize.
Three other Kurdish journalists, Aku Kordnasab,www.ekurd.net
Ejlal Aghvami and Jalal Kaboudvand, have also been
behind bars for several months.
Also detained is one of Iran's leading journalists,
Ermadeddin Baghi. One of Iran's most outspoken human
rights activists, Baghi was arrested in October.

Iranian Kurdistan (Kurdish: Kurdistana Îranę or
Kurdistana Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan) or Rojhilatę
Kurdistan (East of Kurdistan)) is an unofficial name
for the parts of Iran inhabited by Kurds and has
borders with Iraq and Turkey. It includes the
greater parts of West Azerbaijan province, Kurdistan
Province, Kermanshah Province, and Ilam Province.
Kurds form the majority of the population of this
region with an estimated population of 4 million.
The region is the eastern part of the greater
cultural-geographical area called Kurdistan.
