Kurdistan government supports modern press law  27.12.2007

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq',--, Iraq's Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said on Thursday that the government supported the Journalists' syndicate to enact a modern regulating law.

“The region’s government set to support the syndicate and not to interfere in its affairs in order to enact a modern law regulating press and contributing in boosting freedom by making use of global experiences,”
www.ekurd.net Barzani spoke in a speech delivered at the second conference of Kurdistan’s journalists in Erbil, the Iraqi Kurdistan's capital on Thursday.

He added “the government’s support appeared clear when the region’s president Massoud Barzani refused ratification the press law and returned it to the parliament for further serious debates”.

Journalists in Kurdistan region opposed a press law recently passed by the region parliament and was pending the final approval of Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani.

Two weeks ago, a syndicate delegation, led by Firhad Awni, the head of the syndicate, had visited the region's President Massoud Barazani, who vowed not to sign the new press law and to return it to the Kurdish parliament for further consideration.

Kurdistan’s parliament speaker, Adnan Mufti, defended the ratified press law saying ”any enacted law should be approved by all sides and the press law was extensively debated and sent to region’s government to consider”.

He added “the law ensured the rights of journalist and approved issuing papers without requiring Culture ministry’s approval”.
