Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq',--, The
second conference of the Kurdistan Journalists'
Syndicate started on Thursday morning in the city of
Erbil to elect the new president and members of the
syndicate's council.
"The conference inaugurated this morning with the
attendance of Kurdistan's Prime Minister Nechirvan
Barzani and Parliament's Speaker Adnan Mufti as well
as 363 out of the 3,000 journalists registered in
the syndicate to elect the new president and members
of the syndicate's council," Rahman Ghareeb, a
member of the syndicate, said.
"The conference will also discuss the new
contentious press law," he added.
Two weeks ago, a syndicate delegation, led by Firhad
Awni, the head of the syndicate, had visited the
region's President Massoud Barzani,www.ekurd.net
who vowed not to sign
the new press law and to return it to the Kurdish
parliament for further consideration.
The Journalistic Freedoms Observatory (JFO)
expressed its objection to the press law passed by
the Kurdish parliament, saying it restricts press
freedom and makes journalists liable to detention
and accountability.
