"Today's meeting in Erbil will tackle a number of
important issues, including the Turkish raids on
northern Iraq, the outstanding issues between the
central Iraqi government and the Iraqi Kurdistan
region's government,www.ekurd.net
expanding the four-way
alliance and the recent trilateral MoU signed
between the Iraqi Islamic party and the two main
Kurdish parties," Mahmoud Othman, whose KC is the
second largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament with 53
out of a total 275 seats, said.
Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani visited
Baghdad ten days ago and discussed pending issues
between the Iraq's central government and the
autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region's government, like
the oil contracts concluded between the region's
government with foreign companies to prospect for
oil, which was objected to by the central
government.
Other differences involve the budget for the region
and application of article 140 of the Iraqi
constitution regarding the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.
According to the article, the dispute over Kirkuk
should be solved over three stages: normalization,
demographic consensus, and a referendum on the
status of Kirkuk as to whether it should remain an
independent province or be annexed to the Kurdistan
region.
"Internal issues will also be tackled during the
meeting, including exchanging posts between the
region's prime minister and speaker of the
parliament," Othman added, pointing out there was an
agreement between the two main Kurdish parties,www.ekurd.net
according to which the
speaker of the parliament would be a member from the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and prime
minister from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)
for only two years and then exchanging the posts.
"The two years are about to finish" he explained.
