December 17, 2007

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq',-- The Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani urged the central government in Baghdad to speed up changing the Iraqi flag ahead of the Arab parliamentarians conference to be hosted by Erbil in February 2008, a Kurdish legislator said on Monday.

"Barzani has sent a message to the three leaders of the presidential council, parliament and cabinet asking for changing the current flag before the Arab parliamentarians conference in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan autonomous region,

Othman, whose KC is the second largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament with 55 out of a total 275 seats, said Barzani had affirmed in his message that the Kurds "would never raise the current flag because it still carries the three stars symbolizing the (former) Baath Party."

"The flag under which thousands of Kurds were slain in Halabja and Anfal can never be raised," Othman stressed.

The Kurdish city of Halabja had come under chemical weapons' attack by the former regime of President Saddam Hussein, killing a large number of ethnic Iraqi Kurds and destroying their homes.
