Iraq's Kurdistan president urges central
govt. to speed up changing Iraqi flag

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan Region 'Iraq',-- The
Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani
urged the central government in Baghdad to speed up
changing the Iraqi flag ahead of the Arab
parliamentarians conference to be hosted by Erbil in
February 2008, a Kurdish legislator said on Monday.
"Barzani has sent a message to the three leaders of
the presidential council, parliament and cabinet
asking for changing the current flag before the Arab
parliamentarians conference in Erbil, the capital of
Iraqi Kurdistan autonomous region,www.ekurd.net

Mahmoud Othman, a member of the Kurdistan Coalition
(KC), said
Othman, whose KC is the second largest bloc in the
Iraqi parliament with 55 out of a total 275 seats,
said Barzani had affirmed in his message that the
Kurds "would never raise the current flag because it
still carries the three stars symbolizing the
(former) Baath Party." |

"The flag under which thousands of Kurds were slain
in Halabja and Anfal can never be raised," Othman
stressed.
The Kurdish city of Halabja had come under chemical
weapons' attack by the former regime of President
Saddam Hussein, killing a large number of ethnic
Iraqi Kurds and destroying their homes.
