VIENNA, -- Five people were injured in a
fight involving between 20 and 30 people of Turkish
and Kurdish origin Sunday evening in a district in
the south of Vienna, police said.
Two men suffered serious knife injuries, while three
others were lightly wounded.
Police said they were still searching for the
unknown suspects.
The incident occurred as tensions mounted between
the Turkish army and Kurdish separatists on Turkey's
border with Iraqi Kurdistan.
About 1,000 people also demonstrated Sunday
afternoon in St. Poelten, west of Vienna, to "show
solidarity with Turkey against PKK terror", in
reference to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), but
the protest was peaceful, police said.
Since 1984 the PKK took up arms for self-rule in the
country's mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey.
Iraqi Kurdish politician says, Turkey is using
Turkey's Kurdish separatist PKK rebel group as an
excuse to invade Kurdistan region 'Iraq' to prevent
the establishment of Kurdistan state in the Kurdish
autonomous region in 'northern Iraq', Turkey fears
this could fan separatism among its own large
Kurdish population in southeast Turkey. www.ekurd.net
