SANANDAJ (Sina), Iranian Kurdistan, --
Iranian security forces arrested 11 members of the
outlawed Kurdish separatist group PJAK in the
western Kurdistan province (Eastern Kurdistan) , the
Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.
"A group linked to PEJAK was dismantled by the
forces of the intelligence ministry... and 11 active
members have been arrested and handed over to the
judiciary," said the intelligence ministry, quoted
by the agency.
It said the rebel cell had been behind several bomb
attacks and had set alight and attacked a police
station in the provincial Kurdish capital Sanandaj.
The Intelligence Ministry said the Kurds were
members of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PEJAK),
an offshoot of the Kurdish separatist movement,
Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), that is fighting
Turkey, IRNA reported. Analysts say PEJAK rebels
have bases in the remote mountains of Kurdistan
region 'northeastern Iraq'. Iran has on several
occasions this year reported clashes between its
forces and members of the Kurdish group. www.ekurd.net
A military propaganda unit of PJAK has been broken
up in Kurdistan province and 11 people have been
detained, the ministry said.
They were behind a bomb explosion, attack on a
police station, several cases of percussion bomb
blasts and acts against Islamic Republics system,
it said without giving more details.
Iran's Kurdistan, Kermanshah and West Azarbaijan
provinces, which border northern Iraq, have
substantial Kurdish populations.
Kurdish rebel group PJAK (Party of Free Life of
Kurdistan), which is linked to the Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) fighting the Turkish army, has
been behind a string of deadly attacks in
northwestern Iran in recent months.
Iran has repeatedly accused the United States of
seeking to stir up ethnic unrest by giving material
support to PEJAK and outlawed rebel groups in other
sensitive border regions.
Since 2004 PEJAK took up arms for self-rule in the
country's mainly Kurdistan province northwestern of
Iran. Half the members of PEJAK are women. www.ekurd.net

greater parts of West Azerbaijan province, Kurdistan

Kurds form the majority of the population of this
region with an estimated population of 4 million.
The region is the eastern part of the greater
cultural-geographical area called Kurdistan.

The present leader of the organisation is Haji
Ahmadi. According to the Washington Times, half the
members of PEJAK are women, many of them still in
their teens, and one of the female members of the
leadership council is Gulistan Dugan, a psychology
graduate from the University of Tehran. This is due
primarily to the fact that PEJAK is strongly
supportive of women's rights. PEJAK believes that
women must have a strong role in government and must
be on an equal level with men in leadership
positions.
