Iranian military kills three Kurdish PEJAK militias  8.11.2007

November 8, 2007

Kamyaran, Iranian Kurdistan, --  Iranian security forces have killed three Iran's Kurdish PEJAK rebels in the western province of Kurdistan-Iran, the government daily Iran said on Thursday.

"Three armed members of the PEJAK terrorist group were killed in Kamyaran county, Kurdistan province," the report said, without specifying when the incident took place.

It also did not provide identities of the three or their gender, but only said they were nationals from a neighboring country and members of the Iraqn's separatist Kurdish group PEJAK, or Free Life Party of Kurdistan.

The rebels were identified as "nationals of a neighbouring country."

Iran's Kurdistan, Kermanshah and West Azarbaijan provinces, which border northern Iraq, have substantial Kurdish populations.

The Kurdish rebel group PEJAK (Party of Free Life of Kurdistan), which believed to be linked to the Turkey's Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighting the Turkish army, has been behind a string of deadly attacks in northwestern Iran (Iranian Kurdistan) in recent months.

Since 2004 PEJAK took up arms for self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdistan province northwestern of Iran. Half the members of PEJAK are women.

Iran has repeatedly accused the United States of seeking to stir up ethnic unrest by giving material support to PEJAK and outlawed rebel groups in other sensitive border regions.

Iran has echoed Turkey's frustration over the failure of the authorities in Kurdistan autonomous region in 'northern Iraq' to crack down on Kurdish rebels, but says it wants a peaceful end to the standoff.

Tehran does not back Ankara's threats of military action in northern Iraq, where both PEJAK and the PKK have bases from which they launch cross-border attacks into Iran and Turkey.

** Iranian Kurdistan (Kurdish: Kurdistana Īranź or Kurdistana Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan) or Rojhilatź Kurdistan (East of Kurdistan)) is an unofficial name for the parts of Iran inhabited by Kurds and has borders with Iraq and Turkey. It includes the greater parts of West Azerbaijan province, Kurdistan Province, Kermanshah Province, and Ilam Province. Kurds form the majority of the population of this region with an estimated population of 4 million. The region is the eastern part of the greater cultural-geographical area called Kurdistan.

The present leader of the organisation is Haji Ahmadi. According to the Washington Times, half the members of PEJAK are women, many of them still in their teens, and one of the female members of the leadership council is Gulistan Dugan, a psychology graduate from the University of Tehran. This is due primarily to the fact that PEJAK is strongly supportive of women's rights. PEJAK believes that women must have a strong role in government and must be on an equal level with men in leadership positions.
