US Deputy Secretary of State held talks with Kurdistan prime minister  29.11.2007

November 29, 2007

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', -- There are "definite" signs of improvement in the security situation in Iraq, US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte told reporters in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region.

"I saw a definite improvement in the security situation," Negroponte said at a late night news conference Wednesday in Iraqi Kurdistan's capital, Erbil, where he arrived earlier in the day at the start of visit to Iraq and Kurdistan region.

"There is a political process under way in parallel with the security achievements, including on national reconciliation and the oil law," he said after holding talks with Kurdistan prime minister Nechirvan Barzani.

"We are very optimistic that the progress that has occurred in security will be matched with political progress," Negroponte said. "We think the political progress that has happened already is significant."

Former US intelligence chief and ambassador to Baghdad, Negroponte has been deputy to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice since January.

He told the news conference the United States, Turkey and Iraq shared the same views on the Turkey's rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which uses bases in Iraq's Kurdistan region as springboards to launch attacks across the Turkish border.

"The PKK is threatening security," said Negroponte. "The three countries are determined to cooperate on this issue."

He gave no details of the remainder of his programme for his four-day visit to Iraq.
