Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',--
Massoud Barzani, the president of Kurdistan
autonomous region in 'northern Iraq', held meetings
on Sunday with members of the Kurdistan Political
Parties high board, touching on subjects that
included the recent visit to Ankara by regional
parliament members, as well as the possibility of a
Turkish military intervention in Kurdistan 'northern
Iraq'.
Speaking after the meeting, Selahaddin Muhammed
Bahattin told Dogan News Agency reporters "Following
our Ankara visit, we reached the conclusion that
Turkey does not want to engage in a wide-reaching
intervention into the region.
But there is the likelihood of an operation which is
going to be limited in scope. This may include moves
such as air strikes. As long as this operation does
not damage our civilian areas, we do not have the
intention of interfering with Turkey's actions." |

Government of Kurdistan 'Iraq' |
In meetings over the weekend in Kurdistan region,
Barzani told parliamentary members that the Iraqi
Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) would not take
sides in the struggle between Ankara and the
Turkey's outlawed PKK rebels group, and that he
believed that the PKK was a problem that concerned
Turkey's national interests.
Over 37,000 Turkish soldiers and Kurdish PKK
guerrillas have been killed since 1984 when the PKK
took up arms for self-rule in the country's mainly
Kurdish southeast of Turkey.
Turkey rejects direct talks with the official Iraqi
Kurdistan government on the crisis over the Turkey's
separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels.
Iraqi Kurdish politician says, Turkey is using
Turkey's Kurdish separatist PKK rebel group as an
excuse to invade Kurdistan region 'Iraq' to prevent
the establishment of Kurdistan state in the Kurdish
autonomous region in 'northern Iraq', Turkey fears
this could fan separatism among its own large
Kurdish population in southeast Turkey. www.ekurd.net
Turkey has never, and still does not, recognize the
Kurdistan region government (KRG) and refuses to
meet with its representatives in any official
capacity. That reflects Ankara's fear that any
international respect shown to the autonomous Iraqi
Kurdistan region would only embolden Turkey's own
large Kurdish minority to seek similar home-rule
status. www.ekurd.net
Iraqi Kurds says, the PKK problem is an "internal
Turkish problem,"
Massoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan regional
government that holds sway in northern Iraq,
regretted Ankara's refusal to hold direct talks on
the crisis over the Turkey's separatist Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) rebels.
