WASHINGTON, D.C. , -- The White House on
Wednesday cautioned Turkey against making a military
incursion into Kurdistan region 'northern Iraq'
after Kurdish PKK rebels launched cross-border
attacks from there.
"We do not think it would be the best place for
troops to go into Iraq from Turkey at this time,"
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters,
echoing the State Department's position stated the
day before. "We think that we can handle this
situation without that being necessary."
On Tuesday, The United Stateswarned Turkey against a
unilateral incursion into Iraqi Kurdistan in pursuit
of separatist PKK ethnic Kurds, after Ankara said it
would authorize such an operation if it deemed
necessary.
"I am not sure that unilateral incursions are the
way to go, the way to resolve the issue," said State
Department spokesman Sean McCormack.
"We have counseled them both in public and private
for many, many months (on) the idea that it is
important to work cooperatively to resolve this
issue," McCormack added.
