Sanandaj, Iranian Kurdistan, -- An Iranian
policeman was killed and a soldier seriously wounded
in the latest deadly clashes between Iranian
security forces and Kurdish militants in Iranian
Kurdistan (northwestern Iran) , the ISNA news agency
reported Sunday.
The news agency said that the policeman was killed
on Friday by rebels from the militant Kurdish
separatist group PEJAK which is linked to Turkey's
outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
"In the clashes on Friday morning, Veria Malaki, a
member of the security forces in Kurdistan province,
was martyred and a soldier was seriously wounded,"
said ISNA.
"PEJAK has claimed responsibility for this act," it
added, without giving further details.
It appeared that the clashes had taken place in
Iranian Kurdistan province, which has a substantial
Kurdish population and borders the autonomous
Kurdistan region in northern Iraq.
PEJAK militants, who are said by officials to sneak
over the Iraqi border in small groups, have been
blamed for a spate of deadly incidents in Iran's
northwestern Kermanshah, Kurdistan and West
Azarbaijan provinces.
PEJAK (Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan) , took up
arms for self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdistan
province northwestern of Iran. Half the members of
PEJAK are women.
Iran has been exasperated by the lack of action from
Iraqi Kurdistan authorities against Kurdish militant
bases and the Iranian military has been shelling
their camps inside northern Iraq.
Tehran's frustration is shared by its eastern
neighbour Turkey, which is considering launching an
incursion to eliminate Kurdish rebels in northern
Iraq after 15 of its soldiers were killed in PKK
attacks last week.
Iran has also repeatedly accused the United States
of seeking to stir up ethnic trouble by giving
material support to PEJAK (Party of Free Life of
Kurdistan) and outlawed rebel groups in other
sensitive border regions.

The present leader of the organisation is Haji
Ahmadi. According to the Washington Times, half the
members of PEJAK are women, many of them still in
their teens, and one of the female members of the
leadership council is Gulistan Dugan, a psychology
graduate from the University of Tehran. This is due
primarily to the fact that PEJAK is strongly
supportive of women's rights. PEJAK believes that
women must have a strong role in government and must
be on an equal level with men in leadership
positions.
