Iraqi Kurdistan PM urges investors to work in region  29.10.2007

October 29, 2007

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',-- Iraqi Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani called on Iraqi investors abroad to work in the autonomous Kurdistan region.

"I call on Iraqi investors in neighboring and other countries to return to the region and work hard to make (Iraqi) Kurdistan a springboard to build Iraq," Barzani said during the inauguration of the 3rd Erbil International Fair on Monday.

The two-day even will see the participation of more than 300 companies from 22 Arab and other countries. Barzani expressed content over participations in the fair, noting "the region's government is following up with great interest these participations and we even wish the participants to assess the investment atmosphere in the region themselves."

Speaking on the tension on the Iraqi Kurdistan-Turkish borders, Barzani said "we're working on building good relations with Turkey and neighboring countries. We would never allow any group to use the Iraqi Kurdistan region's lands to strike Turkey or any other country."

Barzani urged peaceful solutions instead of a war in dealing the issue of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), condemning the PKK fighters' attacks on the Turkish army last week.

The crisis on the Iraqi-Turkish borders unprecedentedly flared up during the past couple of weeks after the Turkey's Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is outlawed in Turkey, escalated operations against Turkish forces. Fighters of the PKK, holed up in mountainous areas in Kurdistan 'northern Iraq', had killed, wounded and captured more than 40 Turkish soldiers lately.

After the PKK escalations, the Turkish government received the thumbs up from parliament to carry out a military operation against the PKK inside Iraqi Kurdistan region territories.

Earlier on Monday an Iraqi presidential press release read that President Jalal Talabani discussed with Iranian ambassador in Baghdad Hassan Kazemi Qomi the currently tense situation on the Iraqi-Turkish borders.

"Talabani received Qomi in Baghdad on Sunday evening to discuss political and security conditions and means to provide security and stability in Iraq,". The two sides underlined the importance of settling the Iraqi-Turkish crisis through dialogue and diplomatic solutions in a way that would enhance peace and security in the region in general, added the release.

Talabani and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had received two phone contacts on Saturday evening from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who offered Iran's help to settle the crisis with Turkey by peaceful means.

A presidential statement on Sunday pointed out that Talabani wished "President Ahmadinejad would exert efforts with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan (who was paying a visit to Iran then) to replace the language of threats and military intervention with one of dialogue and understanding."
