Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', -- A
Kurdish delegation led by senior leaders from the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan
Democratic Party (KDP) headed to Iran on Thursday
morning to discuss border closures, a spokesman for
the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said.
"The delegation included the secretary of KDP's
political bureau, Fadil al-Mirani; a senior PUK
leader, Othman Hajji Mahmoud, and Kurdistan's
Minister of Interior Kareem Sinjari," Jamal Abdullah
said.
"We are looking forward to an agreement between the
Kurdistan region and the Islamic Republic of Iran
because border closures have negatively affected the
interests of the people of Kurdistan and Iran,"
Abdullah added.
Two weeks ago,
Iranian authorities closed all
five of its border crossings with
Iraq's Kurdistan region in protest of U.S. forces'
arrest of an Iranian citizen for his suspected
involvement with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard
Corps-Quds Force and for allegedly smuggling weapons
into Iraq.
