Iraqi Kurdistan to send delegation to Iran to discuss border closure  2.10.2007

Erbil-Hewler, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',-- Spokesman for Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Jamal Abdullah said on Monday that the KRG will send a high-ranking delegation this week to negotiate the border closure issue with Iran.

“A high-ranking Iraqi Kurdistan delegation will discuss the border closure issue with the Iranian officials to convince them cancel their shelling of border areas and to negotiate about the crisis,” Abdullah told AFP.

On September 24, Iran closed its border with Iraq's Kurdistan region in protest at the arrest of an Iranian by the US military. "All five entry points on the border between Iran and Kurdistan region have been closed by the Iranian authorities" said Jamal Abdallah, spokesman for the Kurdish Regional Government..

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Al Husseini refused to link between the decision to close Iranian borders with Kurdistan region and the arrest of Iranian citizen in Sulaimaniyah by US Forces on September 20.

All economic and trade relations with the Iraqi Kurdistan have been cut, an Iranian official in the border province of Kermanshah said on Sept 26.

In the note, they have underlined their economic, social, and cultural ties with Iran, Abdullah added.

Iranian forces continuously shelling Kurdish PEJAK guerrilla positions in Iraqi Kurdistan border areas. Thousand of Iraqi Kurds left the border area with Iran.

PEJAK (Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan) , Since 2004 PEJAK took up arms for self-rule in the country's mainly Kurdistan province northwestern of Iran. Half the members of PEJAK are women.
