BAGHDAD,-- The Iraqi parliament's leadership
on Wednesday expressed its condemnation of the
Turkish military operations in Kurdistan region
'northern Iraq' and the shelling of several parts of
Iraq's Kurdistan region and called on the Turkish
government to observe the rules of good neighboring.
"While condemning these aggressive acts, the
parliament's leadership urges Turkey to adhere to
the rules of good neighboring and international laws
and regulations governing relations between states,"
the leadership said.
Voicing its categorical rejection of practices
threatening Turkey's national security, the
statement indicated that the two countries' security
is part and parcel of the region's stability.
SIIC chief calls on Turkey to stop shelling
Kurdish villages
In Diwaniya, the head of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi
Council (SIIC) Abdul Aziz al-Hakim on Wednesday
called on Turkey to stop shelling Kurdish villages
in Kurdistan region 'northern Iraq', reiterating his
demands to establish the central and southern
province.
Al-Hakim paid a surprise visit to Diwaniya this
morning, during which he met with the mayor Hamed
al-Khudari and members of the provincial council at
al-Hajim mosque at the center of the city.
He said that "we recommended the mayor to boost
security, services, reconstruction, investment,
fighting administrative corruption and fostering the
national unity."
He also called for establishing the central and
southern province, describing it as a legitimate
demand. The SIIC said last Monday that federalism
and the establishment of provinces is a
constitutional and natural right of the Iraqi
people.

The Turkish forces had opened artillery fire at
Iraqi villages in the border districts of Zakho and
al-Imadiya more than once during the past few days.
On Saturday, Turkish forces fired more than 250
shells for nearly two hours.
The shelling, which caused severe damage, has
occurred on the pretext of attacking the strongholds
of the PKK, a party that is outlawed in Turkey.
Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi is currently
on a visit to Turkey during which he is expecting to
meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an attempt to
pacify the situation.
The Turkish government, led by Erdogan, threatened
to launch military incursions into northern Iraq to
track down members of the Kurdistan Workers
Party (PKK), most recently blamed for attacks that
killed 15 soldiers two weeks ago.
The Turkish parliament is expected to vote on a memo
by the Turkish government to endorse military
operations in northern Iraq for one year.
