Two Kurdish rebels killed in clash in southeast Turkey 15.1.2007

TUNCELI, January 15, -- Turkish troops killed two Kurdish rebels in a clash in a rural area in southeastern Turkey, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported Monday.

Anatolia said the fighting occurred near the town of Lice, in Diyarbakir province, a majority Kurdish area where battles between Turkish soldiers and rebels of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, are common. The agency did not say when the clashes took place or give any further details.

Authorities in Lice were not immediately available to confirm the report.

Kurdish rebels have been fighting Turkish security forces in eastern Turkey for more than two decades, often slipping across the mountainous border from bases in northern Iraq.

The clash occurred despite a unilateral cease-fire proclaimed by the rebels on Oct. 1. Turkey did not recognize the cease-fire, saying it would continue fighting until all rebels were killed or surrendered.

The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

More than 37,000 lives have been lost in the Kurdish insurrection which began in 1984 with Kurdish demands for independence for the southeastern and heavily Kurdish Anatolia region.

The use of the term "Kurdistan" is vigorously rejected due to its alleged political implications by the Republic of Turkey, which does not recognize the existence of a "Turkish Kurdistan" Southeast Turkey. The Kurds have no rights in Turkey.

Others estimate as many as 40 million Kurds live in Big Kurdistan (Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran, Armenia), which covers an area as big as France, about half of all Kurds which estimate to 20 million live in Turkey.

The Kurdish flag flown officially in Iraqi Kurdistan but unofficially flown by Kurds in Armenia. The flag is banned in Iran, Syria, and Turkey where flying it is a criminal offence"
