Press from 23.January.2007

Smuggling Drugs to Sulaimaniyah (Al-Sabah al-Jadeed)

The authorities in Sulaimaniyah last year convicted 53 people in connection with drug smuggling, said Colonel Jalal Ameen, a senior official in the Sulaimaniyah security service. He said that 14 were sentenced to life imprisonment and the others handed jail terms of 2-15. The smuggling of drugs to Sulaimaniyah is a relatively new development and there is no statistical information available on the subject. Ameen said Iran was the main source of drugs entering the city.

Barzani: Kurdistan Not Part of American-Iranian Conflict (Al-Ittihad)

Following his meeting with Iranian ambassador to Iraq Hassan Khadimi Qummi, the president of the Kurdistan region Masood Barazani said that Kurdistan is not part of the conflict between America and Iran. His comments follow news that the Americans recently arrested five Iranians in Erbil. Barzani added that Kurdistan was the only part of Iraq where neighbouring states do not interfere. He also insisted that the region's sovereignty was sacred.

"Interfering" Neighbours (Al-Sabah)

The Iraqi government has expressed anger at what it describes as the interference of some neighbouring countries in the internal affairs of the country. It threatened economic measures if they continued to do so. The move comes as the public cautiously await the start of the government's new security plan.

Defence Ministry Plagued by Corruption (Azzaman)

The deputy chief of staff of the Iraqi army, Nasir al-Abbadi, has said corruption has engulfed the defence ministry and is having an adverse effect on servicemen. The commander of one military unit, Colonel Tahsin Jibur Ahmed, said he is finding it impossible to get the weapons and vehicles his troops need. Nor can he get their wages. The colonel said he has evidence that the wages are being diverted from his men and embezzled after being paid in the names of fictitious servicemen, but added there was nothing he could to stop it happening.

Families Return to Kirkuk Supported (The Kurdish globe)

The High Commission for Implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution held a meeting at the Iraqi cabinet headquarters

"In the meeting, two aspects were discussed," Head of Kirkuk Bureau for Implementation of the Article 140, Mr. Siddiq KakaRash told PUK Media. "The first was to find a proper way for the Arabs resettled in Kirkuk by Saddam's regime to go back to their Homes." He added that the only amount to be paid for each family is up for discussion in the coming meeting. "In the second part, we all agreed that every returning (Kurdish) family must be given land and 10 million Iraqi dinars, under one condition," he said. "Those families must not have received any prior support from the government."
