UK: Kurdish nationals immigrants found in lorry 13.1.2007

January 13, 2007

Three Kurdish nationals were said to be discovered inside the back of a lorry in an industrial estate in Thame.

The men were found at the Station Yard industrial estate, on Park Road, at around midday last Friday.

They were reported to be hidden in a lorry that was carrying sprayers for importing company GPS Sprayers, which is based on the industrial estate.

Peter Brain, warehouse manager for the company, was present when the lorry driver realised he had stowaways on board.

He said: "We were expecting a lorry from Germany, but when the lorry driver pulled up he was very agitated and asked if I could call the police.

"He said he could hear murmuring from the back of the lorry and thought people were hiding in the back so we called the police."

While waiting for the police to arrive both Mr Brain and the lorry driver guarded the door and told the three men to remain inside the vehicle.

Mr Brain added: "It was definitely a surprise.

" I just thought these people must be so desperate to hide in a lorry to try and get here especially with all the risks that it involves."

Owen Bassett, a press officer for the Home Office, said: "We do not comment on individual cases. We have already taken a number of measures to make our borders more secure.

"However, there will inevitably be some occasions when clandestine entrants manage to penetrate our borders unlawfully, and some do in lorries.

"The Immigration Service (IS) is committed to responding to requests by police to attend clandestine events such as lorry drops, whenever and wherever operationally possible."

Oxfordshire Police confirmed it has some men in custody, but would not discuss the case any further.
