London: Kurdish Federation to host the seventh Annual General Meeting 4.1.2007

The UK Kurdish Federation, Fed-Bir, are to hold their seventh Annual General Meeting at the Kurdish Community Centre in Portland Gardens this Sunday.

January 4, 2007

An umbrella organisation representing member community associations such as Halkevi, Kurdish Community Centre, Mala Hevaltiye and the Mesopotamia Society, Fed Bir will take the opportunity to reflect on what chairperson Arzu Peşmen has hailed as a year of lobbying and social work.

The federation will also thank friends and supporters including the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, for hosting the Newroz (Kurdish New Year) reception, and for the GLA’s work with the Kurdish community in London.

Arzu Peşmen

Fed-Bir chairperson, Arzu Peşmen, said: "This year we ran many campaigns to defend the fundamental rights of Kurdish people living in Kurdistan or in exile, and were also involved in several campaigns to raise awareness of the Kurdish issue.

"As an organisation representing the biggest stateless community in UK, we have had great experiences through our close involvement with other democratic institutions and campaigns, mainly Peace in Kurdistan, Campacc, Liberation, Stop the War, Refugee Project and others," she added.

Ms Peşmen also claimed the organisation has learnt a lot from work with the Greater London Authority and other Kurdish, Turkish and Turkish Cypriot organisations to tackle problems surrounding education, health and employment, and to boost the community’s engagement in social and political life in the UK.

She said: "We have great respect for friends of Kurds and those who have worked to keep democracy alive in UK and elsewhere."

The AGM will take place at the Kurdish Community Centre, Fairfax Hall, 11 Portland Gardens, N4 1HU, from 3pm-7pm on Sunday 7 January.
