Finland may begin to send asylum seekers from
Kurdistan (northern Iraq) and Afghanistan back to
their homelands.
The Helsinki Police Department’s Foreigner
Registration Office announced the decision at the
end of the year, reports the online version of the
newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
According to the newspaper, the Directorate of
Immigration has already decided to send eight people
back to Afghanistan following the announcement by
the police department.
The Directorate is also considering returning Iraqi
Kurds to the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
Asylum seekers may appeal the decision, and the
appeal process could take up to a couple of years.
Last year, temporary residence permits were granted
to 104 Afghanis and 77 Iraqis. Officials determined
it would be impossible to return them to their home
countries for reasons including a lack of flight
connections.
