KRG Minister of Finance: No Formal Word Regarding
Civil Servant Raises
In a statement to Voices of Iraq, KRG Minister of
Finance, Bayiz Talabani, said last week that they
had received no formal word from Baghdad regarding
raises for civil servants.
"We have always tried to secure raises for civil
servants but we have not yet received any formal
notification from the central government approving
so," the Minister's statement read. "The budget for
salaries comes from Baghdad and we await their
decision," Talabani added.
The Minister's statements followed recent rumors
that government employees were to receive a 50% to
75% raise of their monthly salaries.
A gang specialized in forging currency arrested
in Sulaimaniyah
An official source from the Directorate of security
of Sulaimaniyah on Sunday, the arrest of three
persons who had falsified amounts of the Iraqi dinar
in the district of Qal'a Dizah (131 km northwest of
Sulaimaniyah city).
The source said "The gang is composed of three
people, from Qal'a Dizah ... They falsified amounts
of the Iraqi dinar in the past few months" He added
"The Kurdish security forces seized the amount of
eight million Iraqi dinars, the category of
twenty-five thousand dinars"
The source said "The security forces, also
confiscated a number of colored copier machines and
computers, used by the gang in the process of
forgery"
Last month the security forces in the district of
Klar (140 km south-west of Sulaimaniyah city)
arrested another gang who had falsified amounts of
the Iraqi dinars.
Fwad Maasum: Kurdistan Coalition List walked out
of an Iraqi parliamentary session
Dr. Fwad Maasum, Head of the Kurdistan Coalition
List (KCL) in the Iraqi parliament, stated,
Saturday, that the KCL walked out of a session of
the Iraqi National Assembly which held a meeting
that day to discuss the Iraqi defense budget.
Massum said the KCL fraction had left the Iraqi
parliament without agreeing on whether the Peshmerge
budget should be included in the Defense budget.
Maasum added that it was not only the KCL who walked
out. The Iraqi Islamic Party and the Islamic Union
of Kurdistan party also objected to a draft bill
authorizing a social fund for the Iraq’s President
and Prime Minster.
No funds for Article 140 in Iraqi budget
The current Iraqi budget has no money allocated for
implementation of Article 140 of the constitution.
The Committee assigned to for implementing the
Article has invited a number of directors of offices
in Kirkuk to go to Baghdad to specify a mechanism to
receive coordination for their work to facilitate
the implementation of the Article and the
normalization of situations in Kirkuk Province.
"The current Iraqi budget has not spelt out any
money for Article 140," Pishtiwan Ahmed, Iraqi MP of
Kurdistan Alliance told the weekly Aso. "(Although)
it has not been mentioned particularly in the
budget; it is said that it was included in the prime
minister's expenditures." He added that Kurdistan
Alliance "will not accept that," adding, "we have
put pressure and will try to change it."
On other hand, a delegation from the Council of
Kirkuk Province met Prime Minister of Kurdistan
Region and pressed for more money to be put aside by
the Kurdistand Regional Government for the project.
The head of the committee has asked administers from
Kirkuk offices to go to Baghdad for a meeting,
schdueld to take place January 31, 2007 for further
discussions. Directors of Personal Affairs and
Citizenship, the municipalities, the Kirkuk
Municipality and other office managers will attend
the meeting.
"The problem of ownership will be discussed in the
meeting," the Head of Kirkuk committee said. He
added that Kirkuk's Real Estate Manager may also
take part in the meeting, "for the same reason."
Halabja Municipality member of the International
Municipality Organization for Peace
The International Municipality Organization for
Peace had 1999 city members from around the world;
Halabja became the city number 2000 to join the
Organization.
"Halabja Municipality suggested that it became a
member of the International Municipality
Organization for Peace," Halabja City Mayor Khidir
Karim told PUKmedia. "The organization held a
meeting in which its high committee decdided to
officially accept Halabja as its 2000th member." He
added that the organization contacted him to inform
him of their decision.
Conference on Investment in Iraqi Kurdistan
Region to Be Organized
The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is to organize a special
conference on investment in Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
Funded by the U.S. Embassy, the one-week-long event
will take place in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and
will focus on potential housing, water, and
electricity projects for Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
"The conference is to be held very soon and will
last for one week," said Jamal Abdullah, press
spokesman for the KRG deputy Prime Minister, to
Kurdistani News last week.
"More than 300 Arab and foreign companies are to
participate in the conference in addition to 150
local companies from Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Eight representatives from the KRG and the king of
UAE are also to attend the conference," added
Abdullah.
The conference is expected to attract more investors
to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region in the near future.
