Saddam's Vice-President in Kurdistan 28.1.2007

January 28, 2007

Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan region (Iraq), -- According to last Tuesday's issue of the weekly Awena, published in Sulaimaniyah, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has been sheltering Taha Muhyaddin Marouf, a Kurd, former Iraqi Vice-President during Saddam's era.

According to the news, Mr. Marouf has been given a house in the Dukan resorts, where he is busy preparing his retirement papers. Originally from Sulaimaniyah, in the early 1970s, Mr. Marouf represented the KDP wing, led by Late Ibrahim Ahmed to hold a post in Baghdad.

In 1974, the Kurdish armed struggle resumed due to the failure of the Iraqi regime to implement the March 11th agreement, but Mr. Marouf did not rejoin the revolution. Instead, he remained in Baghdad where he was awarded a number of high-ranking positions during Saddam's days.

His latest post was Saddam Hussein's Vice-President, which he held until the liberation of Iraq in 2003.

Close to the industrial area of Sulaimaniyah, Mr. Marouf currently owns a number of pieces of agricultural lands, inherited from his forefathers.
