Chaldo-Assyrians seek autonomy
In a statement to Kurdistan Online website ,Romeo
Hakari, the president of Beit Al-Nahren, said that
they are considering a proposed plan to build an
autonomous region.
Although many have expressed concerns that the
attempt could be in violation of the Iraqi permanent
constitution, Hakari said that the proposed plan was
developed in accordance with the constitution, and
enjoys the political support of Kurdish authorities
and the Kurdish people.
Article 125 of the Iraqi permanent constitution and
the second article of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region
regional constitution allows the formation of
self-administered autonomous regions, as long as the
region is not situated within another region,
according to Hakari's statements.
Chaldo-Assyrians seek to form their autonomous
region at the planes of Mosul, an area always
inhabited by the people.
Dukan, Darbandikhan dams to be renovated
Kurdistan Regional Government Ministry of
Electricity has allocated $40 million to renovate
Dukan and Darbandikhan dams.
The Minister of Electricity, Hoshyar Swaili, said
that the $40 million budget came from the
international bank to help rebuild Iraq.
Swaili said that his ministry has already drafted
its proposal and distributed copies to some foreign
construction companies to bid on.
Dukan dam was built in 1953 and is capable of
storing 6.8 billion square meters of water. Built in
1961, Darbandikhan dam can hold 3 billion square
meters of water.
KRG Oil Deals to Go Through Baghdad
The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Oil said
that potential oil deals and projects in the Iraqi
Kurdistan Region must be forwarded to the parliament
in Baghdad.
"Once drafts and proposals are submitted, they will
be reviewed and discussed for approval at the
parliament where representatives of the Kurdish list
can offer their suggestions and comments regarding
the proposed plans," said the Iraqi Minister of Oil.
"Oil revenues from across the country will be kept
in a special treasury box to be handled by the
central government for later distribution to the
country's regions, depending on the size of the
population in each region," added the Minister.
In a recent statement, Kurdish authorities said they
had not been informed by the central government of
the new legislation regarding oil revenues.
Iraqi Kurdistan Region had earlier been given the
authority to negotiate contracts and sign them,
according to Kurdish officials.
