New resolutions by KRG ministries of electricity
and water resources
Kurdistan Regional Government Ministries of
Electricity and Water Resources held a joint meeting
last week to discuss the current situation of the
local dams and the possibility of launching some
hydropower projects to increase the electricity
supply to the three Kurdish governorates.
The meeting resulted in the issuance of a number of
new resolutions to deal with the current power
shortage in the region by trying to generate
hydropower, finding necessary funds for the
potential projects in or outside the region, and
conducting a study.
A special technical committee will also be formed
jointly by the two ministries to assess the
situation and do necessary research on the issue.
Drug field destroyed in Sulaimaniyah
A source from Sulaimaniyah City's security, Asayish,
announced that a field for opium was destroyed, with
a number of workers on the farm were arrested.
"They tried to cultivate a farm between Tasluja and Sulaimaniyah
with opium," the source told the weekly Hawlati.
"When the Asayish forces knew of the incident, they
arrested the involved persons."
The source added that in 2006, nearly 32 people were
arrested for using and selling drugs. "They were
convicted and sentenced between three years to life
imprisonment."
According to Asayish, the number of drug users in
Kurdistan reaches some 700 persons.
President Barzani: It is impossible for any one
to commit unlawful acts in the Region
Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani, in Salahaddin,
received Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Agai Qumi. Many topics of common concern such as
political and administrative issues between
Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic were
discussed.
They two discussed the consequences following the
attack on the Iranian consulate in Arbil. Kurdistan
President confirmed that Kurdistan was the only
region of Iraq, which is free of any foreign bases,
making it impossible for any one to breach laws in
the Region. Therefore, the act, which was done in
Erbil, was inadequate and it was an unexpected
mistake.
Barzani reassured that the Region's sovereignty was
a holy matter and it should not be violated. He said
that the United States
and Iran should not put the region among their own
conflict; adding that the office in Arbil was not
something secret; it was by
permission from the government of the federal Iraq.
First Official Austrian Trade Mission to the
Kurdistan Region
From the 19th to the 22nd of January a delegation of
27 Austrian businessmen and representatives of the
Austrian Federal Economic Chamber have visited Erbil,
the capital of the Kurdistan Region. Around 20
companies of different sectors have held business
meetings with their Kurdistani counterparts. They
were specialists in the gas and oil sector, in power
supply, Waste and Water Management, Hospital and
Hospital Supply, Engineering and Consultancy and
Electrical Supply.
The Trade Mission was organized by the Erbil Office
of the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy
together with the Austrian Federal Chamber of
Commerce. "We thank the Kurdistan Regional
Government together with the Erbil Chamber of
Commerce and the Businessmen Union that were very
supportive during the preparation and the events",
