Barzani: Kirkuk is a Kurdistani city, and what is happening in Turkey is electoral propaganda

Massoud Barzani, President of Kurdistan autonomous region (Iraq), said "the city of Kirkuk is a Kurdistani city and uproar raised by Turkey is merely electoral propaganda" stressing the need to implement Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, which provides for the normalization of the situation in Kirkuk and a referendum is to be held in late 2007 to decide whether to join the Kurdistan region or remain with Baghdad.

Judge Rizgar Amin for top judge

Mr. Rizgar Amin, a judge, has been chosen by the president of Kurdish Region to investigate the files belonging to Ba'th agents.

A well-informed source told Awena weekly that the committee to investigate the files of Ba'ath agents, which was formed by president of the region, held its first session last Wednesday.

"Judge Rizgar Amin, a member of Kurdistan's Appeals Court, will head the committee that has a number of experts in law," the source said, adding that this committee will work within the framework of the espionage portfolios of those who did not get benefit from the general pardon of 1991 by the Kurdistan Front and continued in spying for the Ba'th regime.

In order to obtain all the dossiers, the committee is due to ask newspapers and other political groups and parties to hand over any files that they may have. The committee is said to prefer to carry on with its duty away of media.

Austria invites Kurdish music group

The Head of Nali Music Group announced his team has been invited to hold two concerts in Austria.

"The first concert is due to take place in Vienne on the 20th of this month," Aras Koyee told the local media. "While the second will be a week after that in Grass," he added.

Aras added that they also intend to visit Sweden, Germany and Holland during their tour. "The process of getting ready for travel is on way," he said, predicting these visits to begin by the end of their Austrian tour.

Nali Music is a folklore team, founded in 1988, which, so far, has released four albums. Its last album was released the last year.

New Kurdistan MP sworn in

According to sources, in its 28th session, the Kurdistan Parliament unanimously agreed to accept the resignation submitted by former Member Rafaat Hamarash.

PUK's politburo suggested that Karim Majid Sharif be sworn in, to replace Mr. Hamarash, who was voted in by other Members of Parliament.

The ceremonies took place on January 15th, which was attended by Speaker Mr. Mufti and his Deputy Mr. Kemal Kirkuki, as well as Mr. Farsat Abdulla, the secretary to the council.

The session, attended by a number of foreign guests, included discussing programs of the bylaws of the martyrs and relatives of the Anfalized in Kurdistan Region. The majority voted on adjourning discussions of the bylaw because of the related minister's inability to attend due to her travels abroad.

Turkish army on alert to attack Kurdistan Region

According to sources, the Turkish military units are awaiting orders to enter Kurdistan Region, in claims that it will be attacking
the bases of PKK guerrillas along the Iraqi boarders.

"Turkish units with 240,000 soldiers have been put on alert in the areas close to the Iraqi boarders," Elaf web site wrote, adding
that these units have been set on the boarders for a year.

Other sources indicate that the Turkish government will soon issue orders to those armed forces to start a wide range offence
in Northern Iraq, making their way through the Iraqi boarders from several areas at the same time.
