Korea's Military Chief Visits Troops in
Kurdistan Region-Iraq

Erbil, Kurdistan
region (Iraq), January 2, -- The chairman of Korea's
Joint Chiefs of Staff General Kim Kwan-jin is
visiting some 2,000 Korean troops stationed in
Kurdistani (Iraq's northern) city of Erbil.
General Kim said the future of Korea depends on
these soldiers, and that he flew more than 8,000 km
to cheer them up on the first day of the new year. K
orea's Zaytun unit has been helping with
reconstruction efforts in Iraq's Kurdish north since
2004 at the request of the U.S.
Gen. Kim's visit follows the National Assembly's
passage of a bill to cut troop strength by half and
to extend their deployment to the end of this year.
Before visiting Erbil, the general was reportedly in
Baghdad for talks on the security situation with
commanders from the U.S. and its coalition partners.
