Erbil, Kurdistan
region (Iraq), January 3, -- A Kurdish official said
Wednesday that Iraqi Kurds were unaware of the date
on which ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was
to be executed.
In remarks to the press, member of the Kurdistan
National Democratic Union Mahmoud Othman revealed
that Kurds first knew about the execution through
Iraqi televised media and added that no Kurdish
officials where in Baghdad at the time of the
execution.
He noted that Kurds were unsettled by the incident
because now those who sold the chemical weapons to
the Iraqi dictator would not be known.
Meanwhile, the office of the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan (PUK) also confirmed that President Jalal
Talabani was unaware of Saddam Hussein's execution
date.
The source also denied allegations claiming that
Talabani phoned his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud
Ahmad-Nejad and told him that Saddam's execution was
speeded up to prevent the US from smuggling him out
of Iraq. |
